Pakistan Science Foundation

Introduction

Pakistan Science Foundation was established in 1973 through an Act of National Assembly to promote and finance scientific activities having bearing on the socio-economic needs of the country. It is an autonomous organization under the umbrella of the Federal Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of Pakistan.

The general direction, conduct and management of the affairs of the Foundation are vested in a Board of Trustees, comprises of three full-time Members and sixteen part-time Members appointed by the President of Pakistan.

The whole time Members i.e., Chairman, Member (Science) and Member (Finance), constitute the Executive Committee which is responsible for the management of the day to day affairs of the Foundation.

The Chairman, is the executive and scientific head of the Foundation. He is also the Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Pakistan Science Foundation has three main Sections, i.e.

1. Science Wing 2. Budget and Finance Section 3. Administration Section

The Science Wing and Finance Section are headed by Member (Science) and Member (Finance) respectively whereas the Admn. Section is headed by the Secretary Science Section is further divided in to subsections.

Objectives

The Foundation function as a financing agency for:

1- The establishment of comprehensive scientific and technological information dissemination centres;

2- The promotion of basic and fundamental research in the universities and other institutions/ centres;

3- The utilization of the results of scientific and technological research including pilot plant studies to prove the technical and economic feasibility of processes found to be promising on a laboratory scale;

4- The establishment of science centres, clubs, museums, herebaria and planetaria;

5- The promotion of scientific societies, associations and academies engaged in spreading the cause of scientific knowledge in general or in the pursuit of a specific scientific discipline or technology in particular;

6- The organization of periodical science conferences, symposia and seminars;

7- The exchange of visits of scientists and technologists with other countries;

8- The grant of awards, prizes and fellowships to individuals engaged in developing processes, products and inventions of consequence to the economy to the country ;

9- Special scientific surveys not undertaken by any other organization and collection of scientific effort of the counrty.


The foundation shall also

1- Reviews the progress of scientific research sponsored by it and evaluate the results of such research;

2- Maintains a National Register of highly qualified and talented scientists of Pakistan, including engineers and doctors, in or outside the country and assist them, in collaboration with the concerned agencies in finding appropriate employment; and

3- Establishes liaison with similar bodies in other countries.


Activities

The Activities and Programmes undertaken by the Foundation for the performance of its statutory functions can be broadly divided into the following four categories.

1- Establishment of Comprehensive Scientific Research and Technological Information Dissemination Centers.

2- Promotion and Financing of Scientific Research in the Country and the Utilization of the Research Results.

3- Promotion and Popularization of Science in Society.

4- Establishment of Liaison with similar bodies in forign countries.

The first activity is carried out by establishing Pakistan Scientific and Technological Information Centre (PASTIC), a subsidiary organization of PSF. The other functions, are performed by the Science Wing of the Foundation.

Science Popularization Section:

Science popularization Activities including Science Caravans, Science Clubs, Science Fairs and holding popular Science Lectures, Workshops, Conferences and Symposia.Pakistan Museum of Natural History is another subsidiary organization of PSF which come out research on National wealth i.e. flora fauna mineral of the country it also performance collection preservation display of simples of flora fauna rocks of Pakistan.


Core Technologies

ILG has identified core technology areas based on national needs, import substitution and exports. These include iron and steel, non-ferrous metals, electronics, computers, semi-conductors, information technology and biotechnology. These areas should have been recognized much earlier. Efforts are being made to fill in the gaps.
